I think the tattered man sets in some reality into Henry. This is really war, people are getting hurt and dying. The tattered man keeps asking Henry about his wound and wants to see it. Henry obviously doesn't have a wound and gets frustrated. He leave the tattered man knowning that his only chance of survival is if Henry stays with him.

3. What role does Henry's mother play while he is away from her?
I know Henry thinks about what his mother said about him not fighting hard and risking his life so that he could come and care for her. So I guess he trys to keep her words in mind, now he wants the "red badge of courage" and to get injuried just to show his mother he can be brave and serve his time the right way.
